Israel announced on Sunday its commitment to stop the Madleen, an aid vessel containing pro-Palestinian activists, from breaching its blockade on Gaza. The military stated that it would use “any means necessary” to prevent the ship, associated with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, from successfully reaching its destination. The Madleen set sail from Sicily on June 1 and is currently reported to be about 160 nautical miles off the Gaza coast, having recently been tracked near Egypt.
This blockade was instituted by Israel, with support from Egypt, in 2007 when Hamas took control of Gaza. Israeli officials assert that the blockade is crucial to thwart arms smuggling. However, humanitarian conditions in Gaza have significantly deteriorated since the onset of the current conflict, which began after a Hamas attack in October 2023. Recently, Israel halted all humanitarian aid inflows for 80 days, pushing Gaza towards severe famine as reported by international aid organizations.
While the Madleen’s cargo may seem limited, the coalition emphasizes the need for the supplies on board, which include baby formula, flour, medical supplies, and other essential goods. Activists, including Thunberg and European Parliament member Rima Hassan, are on a mission to draw attention to the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza amidst the ongoing war. The situation remains critical as tensions in the region continue to reach a boiling point.
