Gaza health workers confirm that at least four Palestinians were shot and killed by Israeli gunfire as they approached a distribution center set up by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). This incident marks a troubling escalation in a series of deadly occurrences at distribution sites in Gaza, where access to humanitarian aid has become increasingly perilous. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claim that troops issued warning shots after assessing a group of approaching individuals as a potential threat, yet the specifics regarding the casualties remain contested.
The latest fatal confrontation occurred near Rafah in the early hours, coinciding with a rush of people hoping to obtain food from the distribution center. Eyewitness accounts relay harrowing statements, including that of a woman whose husband was shot while waiting for aid. According to the IDF's regulations, Palestinians are instructed to only approach GHF sites between 6 AM and 6 PM, with all other times categorized as “active combat zones.”
The GHF, which opened its doors three days ago, has faced significant backlash; it was formed in collaboration with Israeli and US authorities to facilitate aid after a three-month blockade was imposed on Gaza. However, humanitarian organizations have criticized this approach, claiming it undermines the United Nations' efforts and could jeopardize vulnerable populations. Reports indicate that over 60 Palestinians have died from gunfire during the initial days of the GHF operation.
Tensions have further escalated as the Hamas-run Civil Defense agency reported additional casualties following confrontations over the weekend. Simultaneously, a flotilla aiming to breach the naval blockade by Israel is currently navigating through the Mediterranean, pledging to support Gaza residents amid rising tensions. Israel's Defense Minister has issued stern warnings against the flotilla's intentions, suggesting an imminent confrontation.
