Netanyahu Acknowledges Arming Clans Opposed to Hamas in Gaza

The potential political fallout from the Israeli government's actions to arm certain clans in Gaza raises serious concerns regarding national security.

 

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has openly acknowledged that Israel is arming specific clans in Gaza that are supposedly opposed to Hamas. His statements come in light of reports suggesting the authorization of weapon supplies to a group led by Yasser Abu Shabab, primarily functioning in southern Gaza. Israeli defense experts and various political figures have expressed apprehension regarding the implications of this initiative, which they believe could jeopardize Israeli security.

In a video posted on social media, Netanyahu argued that this strategy is designed to safeguard Israeli soldiers, while claiming that publicizing these actions potentially benefits Hamas. Supporters of the initiative emphasize that the Abu Shabab clan seeks to protect humanitarian efforts in Gaza. However, critics swiftly counter that such efforts may lead to widespread looting of aid supplies.

The potential political scandal escalated when opposition leader Avigdor Lieberman accused Netanyahu of unilaterally approving arms transfers without proper cabinet oversight. Defense sources confirmed that the clan received firearms, including Kalashnikov rifles that had been confiscated from Hamas. Meanwhile, Abu Shabab has rejected the notion that his group is dependent on Israeli support, insisting that their existing weapons are sourced locally.

Tensions have increased, with Hamas reportedly beginning targeted actions against members of Abu Shabab's clan. The Israeli government's commitment to combating Hamas through "various means" has, nevertheless, drawn criticism from figures like Yair Golan, who labeled Netanyahu a threat to national security.
