North Korea and Russia Forge Closer Ties with Historic Road Bridge Project
The construction of a new road bridge between North Korea and Russia marks a significant step in their bilateral relations, deepening partnership amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
North Korea has unveiled plans for its first road bridge connecting the nation to Russia, a development deemed "significant" in strengthening bilateral ties, according to state media KCNA. Construction officially commenced on Wednesday and will span the Tumen River in North Korea's northeastern region, adjacent to an existing Soviet-era bridge known as the 'Friendship Bridge.' Russian media outlet Kommersant reports that the bridge is scheduled to be completed by mid-2026.
This announcement follows North Korea's recent acknowledgment of sending troops to support Russia in the Ukraine conflict. The new infrastructure project indicates a further deepening of relations between the two countries, both of which are under heavy international sanctions and have grown closer since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Plans for the bridge were established during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Pyongyang last year, culminating in an agreement to enhance their "comprehensive strategic partnership." At a ceremony inaugurating the project, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin emphasized that the construction transcends engineering, symbolizing mutual aspirations for strengthened cooperation and friendly relations.
The bridge’s construction coincides with alarming reports from South Korean lawmakers, who stated that over 600 North Korean soldiers have perished while aiding Russia’s war efforts against Ukraine. The South Korean intelligence suggests that in return for military assistance, Russia has offered North Korea technological support related to surveillance satellites, drones, and missile defense systems. Earlier in the week, North Korea claimed its forces had played a crucial role in re-establishing control over Russia's Kursk region, a claim that has raised tensions as Ukraine suggests it still maintains a presence in the area.
