Negotiations in Ukraine: A Potential Path to Peace
U.S.-Broader Cease-Fire Efforts Could Unfold Following Halt on Energy Attacks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accepted a 30-day mutual pause on strikes targeting energy infrastructure, following discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump. This decision marks a notable step towards an overarching cease-fire, as confirmed in a call where Trump described the dialogue as “very good.” Zelensky characterized the conversation as “positive, very substantive, and frank,” expressing gratitude for the ongoing support from the United States.
The exchange occurred just a day after Trump’s talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking the first discussion between Trump and Zelensky since a contentious meeting in Washington the previous month. During this call, Trump suggested the possibility of U.S. oversight of Ukrainian power plants, a notion deemed impractical by local energy experts. The White House has announced that teams will convene in Saudi Arabia shortly to explore the expansion of this pause to include activities in the Black Sea, potentially paving the way for a comprehensive cease-fire.
Looking ahead, Zelensky emphasized that the pause would necessitate U.S. surveillance, indicating that Kyiv would compile a detailed inventory of key sites requiring protection. He noted, “Just the assertion and the word of Putin that he will not strike energy sites is too little. War has made us practical people."
Analysts point out that much of what Putin consented to during his call with Trump has been viewed as a limitation, suggesting that the Russian leader did not truly concede significant ground in the negotiations.
