Ukraine and Russia Agree to Energy Strike Pause Amid Ceasefire Talks
In a historic move, Ukraine pauses its military strikes on energy facilities, paving the way for peace negotiations.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine announced on March 19, 2025, that he has agreed to a 30-day pause in strikes on Russian energy facilities, responding to a proposal from President Vladimir Putin. This temporary truce aims to pave the way for a more comprehensive ceasefire agreement. During a recent phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, Zelensky described the exchange as “very good,” highlighting the significance of American support in the ongoing conflict. This marked the first time the two leaders discussed the situation following their contentious previous meeting in the Oval Office.
Zelensky characterized the conversation with Trump as “positive, very substantive, and frank,” and expressed gratitude for U.S. assistance amidst the ongoing turmoil. Notably, Trump suggested that the U.S. could assume control of Ukrainian power facilities, an idea that experts on energy dismissed as impractical. The White House announced that technical teams would convene in Saudi Arabia soon to discuss extending the truce to include the Black Sea region, paving the way towards a more extensive cessation of hostilities.
Looking ahead, Zelensky emphasized the importance of U.S. oversight to ensure compliance with the agreement. He asserted, “Just the assertion and the word of Putin that he will not strike energy sites is too little,” reflecting a pragmatic stance shaped by the realities of war. Analysis suggests that while Putin's concessions during the call were framed as significant, he may not have actually compromised much, indicating a possibility for continued tensions despite hopes for peace.
