After spending more than three years in a high-security Russian prison for possessing cannabis, Marc Fogel has been released due to U.S. government intervention. His arrest and subsequent sentencing appeared to be politically motivated amid strained U.S.-Russia relations.

American Educator Marc Fogel Released After 3.5 Years in Russian Custody
Marc Fogel, a U.S. teacher imprisoned in Russia for cannabis possession, has been released following extensive diplomatic efforts.
Marc Fogel's journey began in August 2021, when he returned to Russia for what he anticipated would be his last year teaching at the Anglo-American School in Moscow. A seasoned educator with nearly a decade of experience, Fogel found himself embroiled in a significant international incident after being arrested for smuggling less than an ounce of cannabis he used to alleviate chronic back pain. In June 2022, Fogel was sentenced to 14 years in a high-security prison, a sentence remarkably harsh compared to those given to convicted murderers in Russia.
After a lengthy campaign for his release by the U.S. government, Fogel, now 63, was finally set free on Tuesday, having spent three and a half years in captivity. His imprisonment, like those of others such as Brittney Griner and journalist Evan Gershkovich, illustrated how American citizens can be caught in the crossfire of geopolitical tensions, particularly following the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Fogel's situation was further complicated when Russia rescinded the diplomatic immunity previously offered to educators at the Anglo-American School. By 2022, the Russian government had closed the school and confiscated its assets, putting many educators in a vulnerable position. Eric Rubin, a former diplomat who worked diligently for Fogel's release, described the situation as one of hostage-taking, pointing out that Russian authorities likely anticipated Fogel’s possession of cannabis upon his arrival in the country.
As international relations continue to be strained, stories like Fogel's remind us of the increasing dangers that can arise for Americans traveling abroad, especially in countries where political tensions are high. Now reunited with his wife, Jane, Marc Fogel's release marks a significant development in a complex narrative intertwining education, justice, and international diplomacy.
