Zelensky Calls for Stronger Action Against Russia as Diplomatic Talks Continue
Ukrainian President urges US and European allies to intensify pressure on Moscow amid ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a poignant appeal to US and European leaders during a high-stakes meeting in Paris, urging them to exert "pressure" on Russia to agree to a ceasefire. The meeting brought together US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and French President Emmanuel Macron, marking the most significant transatlantic discussions regarding the Ukraine conflict since February.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to the discussions, asserting that European leaders remain focused on prolonging the war rather than promoting peace. The talks commenced with a lunch meeting at the Elysée Palace, where the US delegation coordinated with Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, along with the national security advisors from Germany and the UK.
In their deliberations, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha highlighted discussions aimed at establishing paths towards a fair and enduring peace, with emphasis on unconditional ceasefire, a multinational presence, and security guarantees for Ukraine. Despite the push from European diplomats for the US to apply more pressure on Russia, the State Department reaffirmed a commitment to find ways to halt the violence in Ukraine. Witkoff’s recent discussions with President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg drew attention, with reports suggesting that Putin seemed open to “permanent peace,” although Moscow previously rejected a proposed unconditional ceasefire agreed upon by the US and Ukraine in prior talks.
The urgency for a ceasefire was amplified by recent events, including a Russian missile strike that killed at least 35 individuals in the Ukrainian city of Sumy and a troubling drone attack on Dnipro that resulted in three civilian deaths, along with injuries to many others.
Additionally, the backdrop of the meeting included President Trump’s controversial remarks indicating he believed the conflict could be resolved "in 24 hours," while also facing domestic backlash from tensions with Zelensky. Trump has publicly criticized Ukraine's delayed initiation of peace talks with Russia, complicating the diplomatic landscape further.
As discussions progress, the stakes remain high, with Zelensky firmly opposing any peace arrangement that excludes Ukraine's direct participation. The complexities of the evolving narrative around the war highlight the need for cohesive diplomatic efforts to shift the tide toward peace and resolution.
