A Dublin jury rules in favor of Nikita Hand, awarding her damages following an alleged assault by MMA fighter Conor McGregor.**
A woman who has accused Conor McGregor of sexual assault has successfully won her civil case, resulting in a substantial damages award. The Dublin High Court jury found that McGregor assaulted Nikita Hand in a hotel back in December 2018, compelling the fighter to pay more than €248,000 (£206,000) in damages.
The jury began its deliberation late Thursday and reached a verdict confirming that the MMA star did indeed assault Ms. Hand. She had also brought similar allegations against James Lawrence, a 35-year-old individual from Rafter's Road, Dublin, but the jury cleared him of wrongdoing, determining that he did not assault her.
Outside the court on Friday, an emotional Ms. Hand expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support she received throughout the trial. She emphasized her determination to set an example for her daughter Freya and other young individuals, stating that they can fight for justice no matter the stature of the person involved.
In her address to sexual assault victims, Ms. Hand offered encouragement, saying her experience serves as a reminder that speaking out, despite fears, can result in justice. Both men had maintained their innocence during the proceedings, asserting that their encounters with Ms. Hand were consensual.
Before the jury reached its conclusion, Justice Alex Owens reminded them that the burden of proof lay with the plaintiff and that they must base their conclusions on the balance of probabilities—more likely than not—in order to arrive at their decision.
