A man has died on a Sydney beach after being bitten by a suspected 'large shark', Australia's New South Wales police have reported.

The incident occurred at Long Reef Beach, where emergency services were called shortly after 10:00 AM local time and, despite their efforts to save him, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have stated that two sections of a surfboard found at the site have been recovered for expert examination, as they investigate the incident further.

This tragic event has prompted immediate beach closures in the Northern Beaches area, which is a popular local and tourist destination.

Authorities continue to work together to determine the identity of the victim and the species of shark associated with the attack. The identity of the victim has yet to be confirmed.

The last recorded fatality from a shark attack in Sydney was in 2022 when a British diving instructor named Simon Nellist was killed by a great white shark. Before that, the last deadly encounter was in 1963.

Australia sees roughly 20 shark attacks each year, predominantly in New South Wales and Western Australia. Historically, fatal shark bites are exceedingly rare, with a recorded mortality rate of just 0.9 throughout over a century of incidents.
