At least two people have lost their lives as wildfires rage across multiple regions in South Korea. Reports confirm the tragic deaths of two firefighters in Sancheong County, southeast of the nation, with additional officials indicating that two more firefighters remain unaccounted for. As the fires break out in various locations, the Korea Forest Service has announced a series of devastating incidents occurring nationwide.
In response to the escalating situation, a state of national disaster was declared at 18:00 local time (09:00 GMT), affecting the city of Ulsan as well as North and South Gyeongsang provinces. Local officials relocated over 200 residents from eight villages in the Sancheong area, which has been particularly hard-hit by the flames. Acting President Choi Sang-mok has called for immediate action to extinguish the wildfires, but efforts have been severely hindered by fierce winds, complicating things further in the vicinity, approximately 250 kilometers (155 miles) southeast of Seoul.
In addition, another wildfire incident in Uiseong County has led to the displacement of over 400 individuals. The Korea Forest Service has issued severe wildfire warnings across twelve areas, including the bustling cities of Busan and Daejeon, as the country braces for continued challenges posed by these rampant blazes.
