Earth's Record-Breaking Heat: The Last Decade's Unprecedented Climate Crisis

A new report reveals that the past decade, culminating in 2024, has marked the hottest years on record, intensifying the urgency for climate action.

The World Meteorological Organization announces that 2024 reached a historic high, revealing alarming trends in global warming and the impacts of climate change.

With the publication of its latest report, the World Meteorological Organization (W.M.O.) confirmed that 2024 has emerged as the hottest year on record, making it the latest addition to an unsettling trend: the last ten years rank as the hottest in nearly 200 years of climate monitoring. Chris Hewitt, head of the W.M.O.'s climate services, stated, "This unprecedented occurrence highlights a stark reality."

In 2024, the Earth's surface temperature was found to be approximately 1.55 degrees Celsius hotter than average temperatures recorded between 1850 and 1900. This significant rise surpasses the already concerning heat experienced in 2023, which previously held the title of the hottest year. The W.M.O.'s assessment, produced with insights from numerous global experts, emphasizes that the extreme temperatures are not just isolated incidents but part of a long-term pattern driven by climate change.

The report also elaborates on how this excess thermal energy in the atmosphere and oceans is spurring an increase in climate-related disasters worldwide. Rising temperatures have contributed to severe weather events, including droughts, floods, and wildfires, resulting in significant displacement for thousands of people. The data further illustrated an alarming rise in greenhouse gas concentrations, with carbon dioxide levels hitting figures last seen two million years ago, underscoring the ongoing impact of fossil fuel emissions on the planet.
