On 11 September 2021, Tom Phillips and his three children went missing for the first time. His Toyota Hilux was discovered parked below a tide line at a beach near his parents' home in Marokopa on New Zealand's North Island. This sparked a massive search operation by land, sea, and air, which concluded less than three weeks later when the family returned home, with Phillips claiming they had been on a camping trip.
However, on 12 December of the same year, the family vanished again, and despite several sightings and a few frames of grainy CCTV, Phillips and his children remained elusive. The lengthy manhunt finally concluded early Monday morning when police responded to an attempted burglary report, leading to a shootout that resulted in Phillips' death.
This tragic end to Phillips' journey leaves many lingering questions, particularly around the disappearance and the reasons why he took his children into the wilderness. Authorities believe his motivations were rooted in a custody dispute with their mother, a claim that Phillips never clarified.
Upon his first return home, Phillips faced charges for wasting police resources due to the costly search efforts, which stretched across the harsh terrains of western Waitomo, amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars. After a second disappearance, police did not mount a fresh search, and he was eventually issued a warrant for arrest after failing to show up in court.
Ending a year-long absence from public view, Phillips re-emerged in late August 2023, when he and one of his children were caught on CCTV allegedly attempting to rob a grocery store. This incident marked a series of sightings where locals reported multiple alleged robberies attributed to Phillips and his children, now aged nine, ten, and twelve.
The final confrontation with police occurred when they intercepted a quad bike allegedly used by Phillips in an attempted burglary. Instead of being taken into custody, Phillips opened fire, injuring an officer and prompting a return of gunfire that fatally struck him. The child accompanying him was unharmed and later revealed the whereabouts of his siblings, who were discovered in a remote campsite, safe but cold.
This incident not only draws attention to the unfolding drama between Phillips and his children but also emphasizes the broader issues surrounding parental rights, custody disputes, and the lengths to which some parents might go amid such turmoil.
