A 22-year-old from Utah has been arrested over the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while on stage at a university event earlier this week.

Tyler Robinson was taken into custody late on Thursday after a 33-hour manhunt that ended when his father persuaded him to surrender to police.

The arrest was first announced by President Donald Trump, who called for the suspect to face the death penalty.

The killing of Kirk, who was shot while debating students on Wednesday, has shocked Americans and highlighted the country's sharp political divisions.

At a news conference, officials revealed the suspect had confessed to his father, expressing a preference for suicide over surrender. The father and a family friend attempted to convince Robinson to turn himself in, leading to his detention.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated that surveillance footage had shown Robinson arriving on the campus of Utah Valley University hours before the shooting. He was found wearing similar clothing to that seen in the CCTV footage.

Investigators also talked to Robinson's roommate, who revealed concerning messages suggesting a plan to retrieve a rifle. The FBI subsequently found the weapon believed to be used in the shooting.

Students expressed relief at the arrest, while revealing feelings of anxiety regarding the motives behind the incident. The suspect, a third-year student in an electrical apprenticeship program, has previously indicated an increasing interest in politics, with connections to the ongoing political tension in the U.S.
