On December 12, 2024, Stanley announced the recall of approximately 2.6 million Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs due to a serious burn hazard related to faulty lids. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall affects all mugs sold in the U.S. from June 2016 to December 2024.
The issue arises from a defect in the polypropylene lid threads that can weaken when subjected to heat and pressure, resulting in the lid detaching unexpectedly during use. This poses a significant risk of burns, especially for users unaware of the issue. Stanley has documented 91 incidents globally, with 16 of those reported in the U.S., resulting in 38 burn injuries associated with the malfunctioning lids.
Pricing for the mugs varies between $20 and $50, available in multiple colors and sizes ranging from 12 to 20 ounces, and were sold through major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Target. In light of the burn reports, Stanley urges customers to immediately cease using the affected travel mugs and contact the company for a complimentary replacement lid.
