China Condemns Alleged Trade 'Appeasement' by Nations Aligned with US
Beijing reacts strongly against countries yielding to US pressure on trade relations.
In a bold response to recent developments, a representative from China's Commerce Ministry lambasted nations perceived to be accommodating the United States in ongoing trade negotiations. This statement follows reports indicating that the US is planning to leverage tariff discussions to coerce foreign governments into limiting trade with China in exchange for tariff waivers.
As negotiations ramp up, the US government, under President Donald Trump, is actively engaging with global trading partners. A Japanese delegation visited Washington last week, while South Korean officials are slated for discussions in the coming days. Since Trump assumed office again in January, he has initiated significant tariffs on Chinese imports, which have extended to affect other nations' products as well.
“Appeasement is a path that leads to instability; compromise ought to be rooted in respect,” asserted the spokesperson for China's Commerce Ministry. “We advocate for all parties to embrace fairness and to uphold the integrity of international economic standards and the multilateral trading architecture.”
Currently, Trump's administration has imposed tariffs as high as 145% on various Chinese goods, with other nations facing a uniform US tariff of 10% that will remain until July. Analysts warn that when additional tariffs are layered on, the overall percentage on select Chinese imports could soar to an astonishing 245%.
