Tropical Cyclone Zelia Hits Northwestern Australia: Residents on Alert
As Tropical Cyclone Zelia makes landfall, authorities issue warnings to stay indoors amid destructive winds and heavy rain.
Tropical Cyclone Zelia made an impactful landfall in northwestern Australia on Friday afternoon, with fierce rain and damaging winds significantly affecting a region vital to the global economy. As the storm struck, locals were urged to seek shelter indoors to ride out the hazardous conditions.
According to Australian meteorologists, Zelia made landfall around 12:30 p.m. local time, located approximately 34 miles northeast of the town of Port Hedland, which has a population of about 15,000 in the Pilbara area—home to significant iron ore mining operations. Wind speeds reached 132 miles per hour, categorizing Zelia alongside powerful Atlantic hurricanes.
A tropical cyclone warning was declared from Wallal Downs to Roebourne, spanning a distance of about 150 miles from Port Hedland. Meteorologist Miriam Bradbury reported heavy rainfall, flash floods, and wind gusts up to 100 miles per hour expected in the impacted area. More intense winds of 180 miles per hour were forecast near the storm's eye, potentially uprooting trees and obliterating permanent structures.
Across the region, the authorities mandated residents in Port Hedland and nearby regions to take cover, instructing them to remain away from windows and doors. Schools and several roads were closed, anticipating flooding risks associated with the cyclone's impact.
While port operations braced for the storm, it was noted that Port Hedland appeared positioned to evade the worst effects of Zelia's core. As the cyclone reached land, the world’s largest iron ore exporter prepared for the onslaught, with key ports such as Dampier and Varanus Island halting operations ahead of the storm's arrival.
Meteorologists indicated that while Zelia may weaken as it advances inland over the upcoming weekend, significant rainfall was anticipated throughout the duration of its journey southward.
