BTS Returns to Fans After Military Service: Global Anticipation Builds
Celebrations erupt in Seoul as BTS members RM and V finish military service, with fans eagerly awaiting their return.
Two members of the internationally acclaimed K-pop group BTS, RM and V, have completed their mandatory military service, stirring a wave of excitement among fans who eagerly await their reunion. The pair was greeted by throngs of supporters in front of Hybe's headquarters in Seoul on Tuesday, where they expressed gratitude through salutes and a special saxophone performance. V urged fans to "wait just a little longer" as they prepare for the full group's comeback.
With all seven members scheduled to finish their service by the end of the month, speculation around their return has been heightened. BTS initially went on hiatus in 2022 at the peak of their fame, leaving thousands of devoted fans yearning for their resurgence. On the day of their discharge, fans, many dressed in purple—the group’s signature color—raised banners and waved photographs of the idols, celebrating their arrival back to civilian life.
In Korea, it is mandated for all able-bodied men aged between 18 and 28 to serve roughly two years in the military, ensuring the nation remains prepared in the face of threats from the North. The atmosphere was festive, with Hybe showcasing a banner reading "We are back," alongside the official emblems of both BTS and their dedicated fanbase known as ARMY.
Among those who traveled for the occasion was Janya, who journeyed from the UK to witness the celebration. She expressed her admiration by stating, "It’s been a long, long time without you. I’m so glad you’re back and finally free to do whatever you want to do." Similarly, Ivory from Australia emphasized the meaningfulness of the moment, as did Hannah from London, who had planned her trip long in advance to coincide with the members’ discharge.
During their official discharge ceremony in Chuncheon, RM thanked fans for their patience throughout the military service period. "Now, I'm ready to hit the ground running again as RM of BTS. Thank you to everyone who waited and looked after us," he stated. V reflected on his time in the military, describing it as an opportunity for personal growth: "I really want to run to ARMY as soon as I can. Thank you for waiting for us during our military service."
BTS, which made its debut in 2013, skyrocketed to prominence with their successful US tour in 2017, showcasing a unique fusion of pop, hip-hop, and R&B predominantly in Korean. Along the way, they have become music icons, achieving record-breaking streams on platforms like Spotify and garnering numerous accolades as one of the most awarded acts in history. The band's advocacy for youth issues and mental health initiatives has further solidified their global impact.
While the group was granted a prior deferral of military service in 2020, they ultimately embarked on their enlistment in 2022, beginning with the oldest member, Jin. As fans now await the conclusion of all members' military commitments, the stage is set for a potentially grand reunion.
