The assault occurred on Tuesday morning in a housing unit at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, located approximately 75 miles (120 km) north of Los Angeles.

According to Pedro Calderón Michel from the state's corrections department, prison personnel responded quickly by activating 911 and administering medical aid before transporting Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, to a local medical facility for further treatment. At 31 years old, he is currently serving a 10-year sentence stemming from a 2020 shooting incident involving fellow musician Megan Thee Stallion.

While specific details about Lanez's condition remain undisclosed, early media reports indicate that his injuries are not life-threatening. The stabbing happened around 7:20 AM local time, and an investigation into the attack is now underway, although no information about the attacker's motive has been released.

Lanez was convicted in 2023 on three felony gun-related charges, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm. The conviction arose from an incident in which he shot Megan Thee Stallion, known off-stage as Megan Pete, as they exited a pool party at Kylie Jenner's Hollywood mansion. During the trial, Megan testified that an argument between them escalated, resulting in Lanez shooting at the ground and urging her to “dance.” She ultimately required surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot.

Despite his conviction, Lanez has consistently maintained his innocence and refused to issue an apology. The case notably divided the hip-hop community, attracting mixed reactions from other artists like 50 Cent and Iggy Azalea, some of whom wrote to the court seeking leniency for Lanez. Prior to his incarceration, he had achieved significant success with seven US top 10 albums in the seven years leading up to his conviction and has hinted at releasing a new album titled "Peterson" while behind bars.
