Tragic Hot Air Balloon Accident Claims Eight Lives in Brazil
Eight confirmed dead in a distressing hot air balloon crash in Praia Grande, Santa Catarina.
At least eight individuals tragically lost their lives in a hot air balloon accident in southern Brazil, as confirmed by the governor of Santa Catarina state, Jorginho Mello. The incident occurred on Saturday morning while 21 people were on board the balloon in Praia Grande. Reports indicate that thirteen people, including the pilot, survived, and authorities confirmed no one is unaccounted for.
Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, stating its commitment to thoroughly assess the aircraft and crew's condition. According to statements from the surviving pilot, a fire ignited within the balloon's basket, prompting an urgent descent. The pilot instructed passengers to jump as the balloon neared the ground, but some were unable to escape in time. As the fire intensified, the balloon lifted again due to the remaining weight before eventually falling due to loss of suspension.
The deceased comprised two couples, a mother and daughter, an ophthalmologist, and a figure skater. Those who survived were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The balloon tour company, Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, which operated the flight, has paused all of its operations indefinitely, indicating it adhered to all Anac safety regulations and had no previous accidents in its history.
In a video posted to social media, Governor Mello, currently on an official mission in China, expressed his condolences and emphasized his administration’s support for the victims' families while vowing to investigate the causes behind the incident. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also offered his sympathies and extended the federal government’s assistance in aiding the victims, with local forces coordinating rescue efforts.
Praia Grande is known for its vibrant tourism, particularly ballooning adventures, raising important questions regarding safety protocols in this popular activity following this devastating event.
