Evacuations Ordered Near Beirut Amid Renewed Conflict

The Israeli military has issued an evacuation order to residents in a suburb of Beirut, marking a significant shift in the ongoing tensions that have persisted since a U.S.-mediated cease-fire was established months ago. The order affects areas around the heavily populated Hadath neighborhood, specifically in Dahiya, and comes in response to rockets fired into northern Israel.

Avichay Adraee, an Israeli military spokesperson, used social media to communicate the order, emphasizing the urgency for residents within a 300-yard radius of a targeted facility linked to Hezbollah, the Lebanese militia known for its strong influence in the region. This evacuation command is the first since a cease-fire was brokered, which followed intense hostilities ignited by a coordinated Hamas attack back in October 2023.

As part of that conflict, fighting escalated into war and an Israeli ground invasion before the cease-fire was agreed upon in November. Although Israel has periodically attacked sites believed to house hostile forces in Lebanon, Dahiya has remained untouched since the truce agreement. Recent air-raid alarms rang out across northern Israel, including in Kiryat Shmona, raising fears among residents.

In the wake of the evacuation alert, gunfire erupted in Dahiya as locals scrambled to warn one another of the Israeli military threat, capturing the chaotic atmosphere reminiscent of earlier wartime days. “People are panicking,” reported Elie Hachem, director of a local hospital that had sustained damages in the previous conflicts. Despite the risks, the hospital has yet to make evacuation plans as staff strive to maintain a sense of calm amidst rising fears.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued threats implying potential military reprisals against Beirut unless tranquility returned to the Galilee region, further inflating tensions between the nations. Hezbollah, however, has denied any involvement in the recent hostilities and reaffirmed its commitment to observing the cease-fire agreements.
