Tragedy Strikes Eastern Uganda as Landslide Claims Lives in Flooding Crisis

At least 13 confirmed fatalities, with fears of the death toll rising to 30, have emerged from a catastrophic landslide in Uganda's Bulambuli district. Heavy rains over recent days triggered the disaster, sweeping away approximately 40 houses and affecting multiple villages, situated roughly 280 km from the capital, Kampala. The Ugandan Red Cross Society reported ongoing rescue operations, primarily focused on locating survivors, with many of the deceased being children, as highlighted by the Daily Monitor.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja issued a disaster warning on social media, acknowledging suspicions of further victims trapped beneath the debris. The heavy rainfall has not only caused landslides, but also led to overflowing rivers, which flooded local schools and churches, devastated bridges, and isolated communities across the region. In response, the military has joined recovery efforts, although tragedy struck when one rescue boat capsized, resulting in the death of an engineer. Parliament speaker Anitah Among offered her condolences to affected families during a session on Thursday, underscoring the widespread impact of these climate-induced disasters.
