In a race against time, authorities in India have evacuated approximately one million residents from vulnerable communities along the eastern coast as Tropical Cyclone Dana draws near. With landfall anticipated by early Friday, various modes of transportation, including airports, trains, and schools, have ceased operations to minimize risks associated with this powerful storm.
Cyclone Dana is currently categorized as a Category 1 hurricane, generating sustained winds of around 75 miles per hour as it moves northwest across the Bay of Bengal towards Odisha. Suresh Pujari, Odisha’s minister of revenue and disaster management, confirmed that more than 5,000 relief camps have been established to shelter the displaced residents. West Bengal, a neighboring state, is similarly responding to the crisis by evacuating its residents.
The looming cyclone evokes memories of the catastrophic cyclone that struck Odisha in 1999, killing nearly 10,000 people. That horrific event underscored the need for preparedness, prompting significant advancements in disaster management over the years, including the establishment of dedicated agencies, construction of sturdier shelters, and strategic evacuation plans.
As part of the proactive response, the Indian navy and other emergency teams have been deployed to the affected areas. The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings for potential flooding and landslides, with forecasts predicting rainfall ranging from two to four inches, and in some locations, potentially surpassing eight inches before the storm’s passage.
Disruptions continue to mount: flights at key airports such as Kolkata and Biju Patnaik International Airport have been suspended, affecting countless travelers. Additionally, Indian Railways has announced the cancellation of over 100 train services. Educational activities, including classes and examinations, have likewise been paused in numerous districts throughout Odisha and West Bengal, while fishing and marine activities in the Bay of Bengal are halted until the storm abates.
With the threat of destruction looming, including notable risks to homes, infrastructure, and agriculture, the government remains vigilant as it prioritizes the safety and well-being of its citizens in the wake of Cyclone Dana.
