Authorities scramble to locate missing Cessna Caravan with 10 individuals on board
US authorities in Alaska are currently engaged in a meticulous search for a small Cessna Caravan aircraft, which went missing while flying from Unalakleet to Nome, two cities separated by approximately 146 miles across the Norton Sound. The plane, with ten individuals onboard, was reported missing approximately 12 miles offshore, prompting urgent action from the US Coast Guard.
The flight reportedly lost contact with air traffic control around 16:00 local time on Thursday (01:00 GMT). The Alaska Department of Public Safety revealed that the passenger list includes nine passengers and one pilot. No identities have been disclosed yet.
The aircraft is operated by Bering Air, who has been contacted for further information regarding the unfortunate situation. According to reports from the Nome volunteer fire department, the pilot had informed controllers that he intended to enter a holding pattern while awaiting runway clearance prior to losing contact, raising concerns about the conditions during the flight.
As search and rescue crews mobilize to the last known coordinates, officials continue to gather more information, remaining hopeful for the safe recovery of those onboard.
