Kristi Noem's Gold Rolex Sparks Controversy During Prison Visit
The homeland security secretary faces social media backlash for her extravagant watch during a trip to one of El Salvador’s notorious prisons.
Kristi Noem, the U.S. homeland security secretary, drew significant attention on social media for her choice of attire during a recent visit to the Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot) in El Salvador. Wearing a casual outfit consisting of a white long-sleeve top, gray slacks, and a baseball cap with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement logo, she prominently sported a lavish gold Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, valued at approximately $50,000.
This visit coincides with ongoing legal battles regarding the deportation of Venezuelans, with the Trump administration having sent hundreds of deportees to the facility earlier this month. The U.S. Court of Appeals recently blocked attempts to resume these deportations, prompting further appeals to the Supreme Court.
While Noem filmed videos amidst a grim scene of overcrowded prisoners confined behind bars, her ostentatious watch captured considerable attention, attracting criticism for being out of place in such a dire environment. Cecot, which opened in 2023 under President Nayib Bukele’s controversial regime, has been widely criticized for its heavy-handed approach to crime and mass incarceration.
In response to the backlash, Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, stated that Noem purchased the watch with proceeds from her books and intended for it to be a family heirloom. However, she did not comment on the appropriateness of wearing the costly item during a visit to a prison that symbolizes severe human rights concerns.
