Roberta Flack, the celebrated R&B vocalist known for classic hits like "Killing Me Softly With His Song," has died at the age of 88, her representatives announced today, February 24, 2025. “We are heartbroken to share that the beloved Roberta Flack passed away peacefully this morning, surrounded by her family,” the statement read. Flack, who had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2022 and had been unable to perform since, left an indelible mark not just as a record-breaking artist, but also as a passionate educator.

Originally from North Carolina and raised in Arlington, Virginia, Flack began her musical journey as a trained classical pianist before venturing into singing. Her big break came in her 30s when musician Les McCann discovered her talent at a jazz club. He famously remarked on her ability to convey deep emotion through her voice. Flack's career soared after her rendition of Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" was featured in Clint Eastwood's 1971 film "Play Misty For Me," leading to her first Grammy win for Song of the Year.

Following that success, Flack continued to dominate the charts with powerful ballads, including "Killing Me Softly With His Song," which earned her a second Grammy in the subsequent year.
