In a surprising move, Taiwan recently announced the appointment of Freddy Lim, frontman of renowned heavy metal band Chthonic, as its new envoy to Finland. This decision has delighted metal enthusiasts worldwide as Finland is known for having the highest number of metal bands per capita. Lim, who has toured extensively in Finland and collaborated with local artists, expressed his deep appreciation for the country, stating that his longstanding partnership with the Finnish music industry had fostered a special connection.

However, Lim's credentials extend beyond his musical fame. He previously served as a national legislator from 2016 to 2024 and led Amnesty International’s Taiwan chapter, showcasing his dedication to human rights and international exchanges. Formed in 1995, Chthonic has captured global attention with its unique fusion of heavy metal and Taiwanese folklore, notably gaining prominence through their 2005 album “Seediq Bale.” Lim's multifaceted background suggests that his role as envoy will bridge cultural and diplomatic avenues, enriching Taiwan's relationship with Finland amidst their shared love for metal music.
