Surge of Violence Claims Lives in Colombia: Insights from Recent Attacks
Two horrific attacks in Colombia have left at least 18 dead and many more injured, highlighting escalating security challenges.
At least 18 people have lost their lives and dozens have been injured in two devastating attacks in Colombia, exacerbating the nation's ongoing security crisis. A car bomb explosion in the bustling western city of Cali resulted in six fatalities and over 60 injuries, according to local authorities. Earlier on the same day, a drone strike aimed at a police helicopter in a remote area near Medellin led to the deaths of at least 12 individuals.
Both attacks are believed to have been carried out by dissident groups linked to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), further complicating efforts for a stable peace ahead of upcoming elections. Cali's mayor, Alejandro Eder, declared a state of martial law, prohibiting large trucks from entering the city, and offered a $10,000 reward for information related to the attacks.
In response to the violence, Colombian President Gustavo Petro and military officials are convening a security council to implement additional protective measures for citizens. The Ministry of Defence reaffirmed its commitment to combating terrorism, stating that these acts would be investigated and punished rigorously.
Eyewitnesses recounted the horror of the Cali bombing, which specifically targeted the Marco Fidel Suarez Military Aviation School, resulting in civilian casualties and substantial property damage. Defence Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned the bombing as a "terrorist attack," linking it to the criminal activities of the narcotics cartel led by Ivan Mordisco.
The drone incident, occurring during an operation against illegal coca crops—critical to cocaine production—saw a police helicopter downed, with tragic consequences for the 12 officers onboard. Images shared across social media depicted the aftermath, with thick smoke rising from the crash site in the Amalfi region.
Colombia has witnessed a troubling uptick in violence, particularly from clashes involving security forces and armed rebel groups. The use of drones in these confrontations has surged, with 115 recorded attacks in 2024 alone, predominantly executed by illegal factions. Just last week, three soldiers were killed in a separate drone strike targeting military personnel in a conflict-ridden area of the country.
