Trump Issues Stark Warning to Iran Over Houthi Attacks on Shipping Lanes
US President threatens Iran with 'dire' consequences if attacks on vessels do not cease.
US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Iran, declaring that the country will incur "dire" consequences should the Houthi movement persist in its attacks on international maritime routes. With tensions escalating, Trump has stated that from this point forward, Iran will be held accountable for every aggression executed by the Houthis, who are widely regarded as Tehran's proxy in the region.
This announcement follows a series of Houthi provocations, including a recent missile strike targeting the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier in the Red Sea, coinciding with renewed US airstrikes in Yemen that reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 53 individuals. The Pentagon's recent military operations mark the largest commitment of US forces to the Middle East since Trump's return to the presidency.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump affirmed, "Every shot fired by the Houthis will be regarded as being fired on behalf of IRAN." He emphasized that the Iranian leadership would be responsible and would face significant repercussions for their involvement.
In response to the allegations of supplying the Houthis with arms and resources, Iran's UN envoy dismissed the accusations as unfounded, asserting compliance with international law and contesting any claims of destabilization in the region.
The Pentagon has reported that its current strikes in Yemen target a broader spectrum of Houthi infrastructures, including drone manufacturing sites, with assurances that there are no verified civilian casualties resulting from these operations. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell clarified, "This is not an endless offensive," reiterating that there is no intent for regime change in Yemen but rather a commitment to restoring security and safeguarding shipping routes.
In a concerning escalation, the Houthis declared they would continue their attacks on vessels in the Red Sea until Israel lifts its blockade of Gaza, despite their past claims of only targeting ships affiliated with Israel, the US, or the UK. Since November 2023, the Houthis have executed multiple maritime assaults, sinking vessels, and claiming lives, while maintaining control over significant territories in Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa.
