In brief
A commission's findings reveal a systematic program by government officials to abduct political dissenters, with chilling documentation of abuses.
Bangladesh's former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, and her government officials are under scrutiny following the release of a preliminary report from a commission established by the country's interim administration. This investigation uncovered a coordinated operation of enforced disappearances, concluding that thousands of individuals were likely victims during Hasina's extended rule from 2009 until her removal earlier this summer. After widespread protests and Hasina's subsequent escape to India, the full scope of these practices began to emerge. Families of those who disappeared have taken to the streets in Dhaka, demanding accountability and information about their loved ones. Many victims, having spent years in clandestine detention, surfaced to share harrowing tales of their experiences.Lead investigator, retired judge Mainul Islam Chowdhury, stated that more than 1,600 cases of enforced disappearances were documented, but the actual count could be two to three times higher. The report indicates a structured command responsible for orchestrating these actions systematically over the past 15 years, implicating Hasina and several senior aides, many of whom have since fled.At least eight undisclosed locations where the detainees were held have been identified, with allegations of institutionalized torture surfacing from survivor testimonies. The commission’s findings paint a disturbing picture of human rights violations committed under the guise of political stability.
