On Thursday, November 5, 2026, Abu Dhabi hosted a high‑level meeting in which the United Arab Emirates’ President, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, welcomed the Republic of Palau’s President, His Excellency Surangel Whipps Jr., for a working visit.

The leaders discussed broad areas of bilateral cooperation, with a particular emphasis on development, the economy and renewable energy. Both sides highlighted the need for sustainable solutions that align with their respective national priorities and the aspirations of their peoples.

A central topic was climate‑change mitigation, where the presidents examined joint initiatives to advance renewable energy projects and protect marine ecosystems. The discussion underscored the importance of protecting Palau’s pristine marine environments while allowing both countries to benefit from shared technological advancements.

They expressed a shared commitment to use the event as a platform for advancing groundwater management, desalination efficiency and integrated water‑resource planning.

Both administrations reaffirmed their enthusiasm for strengthening ties through the Pacific Islands Forum, of which the UAE is a strategic partner. The forums role in aligning climate‑change policies between the UAE and Palau was mentioned as an additional mechanism for cooperation and collective influence on international environmental agreements.

The gathering was attended by numerous senior officials, including Crown Prince H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs H.H. The presidents expressed that future steps will be shaped by ongoing consultations with international partners and stakeholders in the renewable‑energy and water‑resource sectors.

The principal unresolved aspect is the actual scope of joint initiatives that will be formalized following this visit. Both leaders acknowledged that a comprehensive framework will need to be developed in subsequent meetings, and the specifics of project funding, technology transfer and implementation timelines have yet to be determined.
