In brief
On January 22, 2025, Thailand marked a significant milestone in LGBTQ+ rights by legally recognizing same-sex marriages. The momentous occasion brought together hundreds of couples at the iconic Siam Paragon shopping center in Bangkok for a collective wedding ceremony, giving a new sense of legitimacy and pride to LGBTQ+ families across the nation.
The ceremony was a dream come true for many couples like Rungtiwa Thangkanopast and Phanlavee Chongtangsattam, who had been denied a marriage license a decade ago. "We have been waiting for this day for a very long time," Rungtiwa expressed joyfully, reflecting on two decades of love that had long existed in the shadows due to societal disapproval. The event, organized by the rights group Naruemit Pride, was filled with joy as couples were wed one by one in a beautifully decorated hall, marking the beginning of a new era for marriage equality in Thailand.
