In brief

The MV Odyssey, operated by Florida‑based Villa Vie Residences, departed Sihanoukville after refueling with a reduced crew, but its next destination remains unknown. The operator cites soaring fuel costs, which rose to $6,000–$8,000 per cabin, as the root of a financial crisis that began in early 2026. Cambodian officials issued visas for 203 disembarked passengers and have yet to determine the ship’s subsequent plans.

The MV Odyssey, a residential cruise ship run by Florida‑based Villa Vie Residences, left Cambodia’s Sihanoukville Autonomous Port early Wednesday after refueling, according to a provincial tourism official. The vessel, which had stranded more than 200 passengers in the coastal city, departed at 12:25 a.m. with a partial crew, after most of the crew had flown home, said Tang Sochetkresna, director of the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Department of Tourism.

"The cruise ship left the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port at 12:25 a.m. on Wednesday after refueling,"

Sochetkresna added that the ship’s next stop is unknown. Meanwhile, the Cambodian Interior Minister Sar Sokha noted that the General Department of Immigration had issued tourist visas to the displaced passengers, who represent 15 nationalities. Village Vie reported that its operations on the ship were suspended because fuel prices had shot up from an average monthly cost of about $1,800 per cabin to $6,000–$8,000 in parts of Asia. The company traced its financial crisis to the beginning of 2026, after which fuel expenses became unsustainable. The MV Odyssey had first set sail in October 2024 from Belfast, Northern Ireland, on a planned 3½‑year global voyage following extensive repairs. The ship’s departure from Cambodia, the issuance of visas, and the higher fuel costs all point to an ongoing suspension, but the vessel’s future route and any continuation of the voyage remain uncertain. The story underscores the growing impact of volatile fuel markets on luxury maritime ventures and the complexity of routing for ships that rely on continuous funding for their fuel needs. The main unresolved questions are the ship’s next destination, the long‑term arrangement for the 203 passengers, and whether Villa Vie will resume the planned circumnavigation.
