In brief
A daring theft of rare Cheddar from Neal’s Yard Dairy has left the artisanal cheese industry reeling, with losses estimated at $390,000 in what is being dubbed "the grate cheese robbery." The incident raises concerns of unprecedented criminal activity in a world known for its tight-knit community and ethical standards.
In an astounding turn of events, the artisanal British cheese scene is grappling with what has become known as “the grate cheese robbery.” A shipment of 22 metric tons of rare Cheddar, valued at around £300,000 (approximately $390,000), has mysteriously vanished from Neal's Yard Dairy, a well-respected cheese retailer based in London. Patrick Holden, a cheese artisan from a farm in Wales, expressed his disbelief: “We never imagined that this sort of thing would happen. Of course, people have bad debts. But theft? I mean, that just doesn’t happen.” The saga began back in July when Neal’s Yard placed a substantial order with what they believed to be a trusted wholesale distributor tied to a major French supermarket. Eager to meet the bulk order, the retailer roped in Holden’s dairy along with Westcombe Dairy and Trethowan Brothers, but little did they know this transaction would soon turn into a nightmare.Initially excited about being sought after by a French supermarket, Holden recounted feeling flattered, stating, “We’d been going around, proudly, saying: ‘Guess what, a French supermarket is buying our cheese.’” However, the high spirits quickly soured as news of the heist broke, leaving a bitter aftermath in a close-knit community usually committed to quality and trust in their trade. As the investigation continues, the cheese world remains on high alert, with artisanal producers now concerned about the repercussions of this unprecedented event.
