In a tragic incident in Torres, Brazil, three women have died and several others have fallen seriously ill after consuming a Christmas cake suspected of being poisoned. According to local authorities, arsenic has been detected in the blood of one of the deceased and a 10-year-old boy, along with the woman who made the cake, both of whom remain hospitalized.
The shocking event occurred on Monday at a family gathering in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. Out of the seven attendees, six, including the baker, consumed the cake, prompting numerous complaints of a strange "peppery" taste prior to experiencing severe symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea. Five family members rushed to the Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes Hospital, where two sisters, 58-year-old Maida Berenice Flores da Silva and 43-year-old Tatiana Denize Silva dos Santos, succumbed to cardiac arrest shortly after arrival. A third victim, 65-year-old Neuza Denize Silva dos Anjos, presented with arsenic traces and died later that evening.
Police are currently investigating the matter, having sent the remains of the cake for forensic analysis and discovered expired food items at the baker's residence. Although the woman responsible for the cake is not under suspicion as of now, authorities have requested the exhumation of her late husband's body, who passed away in September from initially ascribed food poisoning. Investigators are keen on determining any connections between the two cases.
Test results on the cake are anticipated next week. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization warns about the dangers of arsenic, a naturally occurring metallic element known for its high toxicity and cancer-causing potential, often making its way into food through contaminated water or agricultural practices.
