South Korea’s leading online retailer, Coupang Inc., announced on Wednesday that it suffered a net loss of 715.1 billion won in the third quarter, a reversal of the 131.6 billion won profit posted in the same period last year, according to a press release cited by Yonhap.

The company’s operating loss also expanded to 642.3 billion won from an operating profit of 224.5 billion won in the March–May 2025 window, Yonhap reported. The swing is largely attributed to costs linked to a July warehouse fire and a data‑breach fallout that has weighted the firm’s earnings for the year.

The blaze, triggered at a Coupang Fulfillment Center in Incheon about 30 kilometres west of Seoul, became the second-longest‑lasting warehouse fire in the country, following a 2021 incident at a distribution centre in Icheon that burned for roughly 130 hours, Yonhap added. The fire’s lingering impact on inventory, logistics and repair expense has been cited as a major contributor to the company’s quarterly loss.

In addition to fire‑related costs, Coupang’s financial performance has been strained by the repercussions of a data breach disclosed in November 2025, which affected more than 37 million customers. Since the breach became public, the firm has faced strong public backlash and an ongoing cleanup effort, Yonhap noted. The fallout from the breach is seen as an additional drag on the company’s earnings.

Sales, however, have shown growth. For the quarter ending in September, Coupang’s revenue rose 11 percent to 14.22 trillion won from 12.85 trillion won in the same period a year earlier, Yonhap reported. While the rise in sales highlights the resilience of the company’s core e‑commerce platform, the rising costs have offset these gains.

Financial Trends and Outlook

Lining up the quarterly results, Coupang has now posted net losses for three consecutive quarters in 2026, Yonhap reported. The company’s revenue stream remains largely domestic, generating most of its income in South Korea. Despite the loss, management has not provided a clear recovery roadmap, leading analysts to focus on the ongoing server restoration and fire‑response costs.

Management and the board have publicly thanked employees and partners for their cooperation during the fire incident, but have stopped short of offering a full outlook on when or how the costs might be absorbed fully, Yonhap noted. Investors and customers alike have expressed uncertainty about the company's ability to restore profitability after a sustained period of losses.

Uncertainties remain regarding the long‑term impact of the July fire on Coupang’s logistics network and the duration of the data‑breach remediation process. In its press release, the company acknowledged the lingering effects without outlining definitive timelines or mitigation measures beyond acknowledging the incident’s cost burden.

All of these developments were reported by Yonhap, which cited necessary details from Coupang’s formal release. No additional commentary or external viewpoints were presented in the source material, leaving some aspects of the company’s recovery strategy undefined.
