In brief

A short‑video contest hosted by the Confucius Institute at Eduardo Mondlane University attracted more than 100 submissions from students, journalists and businesspeople, showcasing projects and cultural exchanges between China and Mozambique. Ten winners were invited to China for an educational tour that included visits to Beijing, Zhejiang and Shanghai. Speakers from both governments praised the event as a bridge between people‑to‑people relations.

On Monday, 3 November, Maputo hosted an award ceremony for the short‑video competition titled “United Hearts, Shared Dreams: China and Mozambique.” The event, organised by the Confucius Institute at Eduardo Mondlane University and the Chinese Embassy, marked the 2026 China‑Africa Year of Exchanges and celebrated the long‑standing friendship between the two nations. Over 100 videos were entered, reflecting a broad spectrum of contributors, from students to journalists to employees of Chinese firms in Mozambique.

Competition Highlights

The competition’s theme encouraged participants to depict China‑Mozambique cooperation through creative storytelling. Entries highlighted landmark projects such as the Maputo‑Katembe Bridge and the Mozambique‑China Cultural Center, as well as personal experiences of learning Chinese and everyday interactions between Mozambicans and Chinese. Participants emphasized how mutual understanding can transcend official diplomacy, turning government‑led friendship into a friendship between peoples.

During the ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Mozambique, Zheng Xuan, congratulated the winners on their creative efforts. “Each video, each moment, represents an encounter between civilizations and a communication between hearts,” Zheng said, expressing hope that the participants would become ambassadors of China‑Mozambique friendship and share stories of a real and multidimensional China.

Eduardo Mondlane University rector, Manuel Guilherme Junior, noted the enduring friendship that the videos showcased and underscored the role of young people in strengthening bilateral ties. “With your creativity, you fought against a lack of understanding. You have transformed the official friendship between governments into a friendship between peoples,” he told the participants.

Exchange Visits to China

Ten first‑prize winners received invitations for an exchange visit to China. These winners travelled to Beijing, Zhejiang Province and Shanghai to experience China’s development and cultural heritage firsthand. The visit included stops at the Palace Museum in Beijing, the Yiwu International Trade Market in Zhejiang and the Bund in Shanghai.

Venheque Hassane Ali, a member of the exchange delegation, described the experience, sharing his visits to notable sites and the reception he received during the tour. The delegation emphasized how such visits deepen personal insights into each other’s culture, thereby fostering people‑to‑people ties beyond political rhetoric.

The video competition and subsequent exchange visits were framed as components of the broader 2026 China‑Africa Year of People‑to‑People Exchanges, an initiative aimed at promoting cross‑cultural dialogue and cooperation on projects ranging from infrastructure to education.

No explicit uncertainties were reported by the sources regarding the competition’s outcomes, the selection criteria for winners, or the long‑term impact of the exchange visits on bilateral relations. The information provided presents the event’s achievements and the expectations of its participants and organizers, but does not mention any unresolved questions or potential challenges related to the initiative.
