In brief

The UK's health agency confirmed two new mpox cases linked to prior infections, stressing low risk of widespread transmission despite the more infectious Clade Ia variant posing significant threats in Africa.

Two new cases of mpox, a virus linked to a recent outbreak in central Africa, have been confirmed in Britain, prompting health authorities to take necessary precautions. The UK Health Security Agency reported that both individuals had close contact with a previously infected person. Despite this, experts assert that the risk of rapid spread within the community remains low.The two new patients, alongside the original case, are receiving treatment at hospitals in London, with mpox vaccines now administered as a precautionary measure. Susan Hopkins, the agency's chief medical adviser, emphasized that household transmission is common, hence the emergence of further cases shouldn't be surprising.Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, has been endemic in West and Central Africa for over five decades. However, 2022 saw a global outbreak extending to regions including Europe and the U.S. Although the outbreak has diminished significantly since then, the current subtype, Clade Ia, raises concerns due to its severity. In the Democratic Republic of Congo alone, there have been over 30,000 infections and nearly 1,000 deaths since the start of the year, with UNICEF reporting that many new cases involve children.
