William Unveils Earthshot Prize 2025 Winners in Rio de Janeiro
A project aimed at restoring tropical forests and a treaty fostering ocean conservation are among the winners of this year's Earthshot Prize, unveiled at an awards ceremony in Rio de Janeiro. Each winning initiative will receive £1 million to help scale their efforts towards repairing the climate.
Prince William, the founder of this prestigious global environmental award, expressed that the winners are an inspiration demonstrating that progress in combating climate change is indeed possible.
Star-studded presenters at the event included Brazilian football legend Cafu and Olympian Rebeca Andrade, while pop icons Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes entertained the audience.
Also present were UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, and London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan. Prince William reaffirmed his commitment to the initiative, aiming for this decade to set transformative changes for the world.

- Clean Our Air: Bogotá, Colombia, for instituting long-lasting clean air zones.
- Revive Our Oceans: The High Seas Treaty, effective January 2026, aiming to protect marine life.
- Build a Waste-Free World: Lagos Fashion Week, Nigeria, promoting sustainable design.
- Fix Our Climate: Friendship, Bangladesh, for aiding vulnerable communities in disaster preparedness.
With nearly 2,500 submissions from 72 countries, the five winners were chosen from 15 finalists selected by experts. The Earthshot Prize aims to establish a legacy of collective action to address pressing environmental challenges.
In his speech, Prince William remarked on the enthusiasm and innovative spirit demonstrated by the winners. The event marks a midpoint in the decade-long journey devoted to sustainable development, inspired by John F. Kennedy's Moonshot project.
