In brief

Transnistria is now not only facing a lack of heat but also critical electricity shortages, leading to extensive power cuts as authorities scramble to manage the situation.

After enduring six days without heating, Transnistria, a breakaway region nestled between Moldova and Ukraine, is now experiencing severe electricity shortages. Authorities have enacted eight-hour power cuts each day to prevent the fragile and outdated electricity grid from crashing. This energy crisis began on January 1 when Russian gas supplies were abruptly halted due to Ukraine's refusal to extend a transit agreement. As residents turned to electric heaters to fend off the winter chill, demand on the Soviet-era grid skyrocketed, resulting in frequent outages and disrupted water services. The cessation of gas supplies has put the future of Transnistria in jeopardy. This self-declared independent microstate has relied on Russian economic and military assistance since it broke away in 1990. Traditionally, Orthodox Christmas in the region is a time of celebration; however, this year it comes with hardship due to the lack of gas for heating and cooking. Amidst despair, Transnistria's president, Vadim Krasnoselsky, sent an inspiring message urging the population to maintain hope.Moldova's Prime Minister Dorin Recean expressed the willingness of the Moldovan government to offer assistance to Transnistria, but this offer was reportedly rejected by the region's leadership. Krasnoselsky accused Moldova of attempting to undermine Transnistria's claims to statehood and accused the Moldovan government of “strangling” the region economically. Despite its lack of international recognition, the area remains a focal point of geopolitical tensions amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
