Elon Musk's initiatives to prevent Russia from exploiting Starlink satellites for drone warfare have been acknowledged positively by Ukrainian officials. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated that these adjustments have delivered real results, highlighting Musk as a true champion of freedom and a true friend of the Ukrainian people.

Following reports of Russian drones using Starlink technology in recent deadly attacks including one on a passenger train, Musk took action upon hearing of their operational use. He commented on social media, Looks like the steps we took to stop the unauthorized use of Starlink by Russia have worked, and invited further feedback on additional necessary measures.

Notably, Starlink satellites, which provide high-speed internet globally, have been crucial for Ukraine since the escalation of the invasion in early 2022. Fedorov outlined that Russian drones are especially challenging to counter as they operate at low altitudes and are difficult to detect with electronic warfare methods.

Citing reports from the Institute for the Study of War, the Russian military's efficiency has dramatically increased with the integration of Starlink, particularly with the use of inexpensive kamikaze drones. In light of these developments, SpaceX has reportedly implemented a 75 km/h speed limit on Starlink-connected equipment in the region to disrupt enemy operations.

Additionally, Fedorov announced plans for a whitelist of authorized Starlink terminals in Ukraine, ensuring that any unregistered devices will face disconnection. This initiative aims to tighten controls on satellite communications potentially used by the enemy. The Defense Minister underscored the importance of collaboration with SpaceX in these efforts.

Despite the tumultuous history between Musk and Ukrainian authorities, particularly regarding service access in critical zones, both men remain focused on utilizing Starlink's capabilities for defense. Fedorov has previously praised the swift provision of Starlink access at the onset of the conflict, considering it vital for maintaining Ukraine's stability.
