The controversy intensified following a right-leaning influencer’s claims that day care facilities run by Somali Americans in Minneapolis were involved in defrauding upwards of $100 million. O’Neill has demanded detailed audits from the state, including records like licenses and attendance reports. We have turned off the money spigot and we are finding the fraud, he asserted.
This development comes shortly after U.S. Homeland Security officials carried out inquiries into various unidentified businesses in Minneapolis as part of an ongoing fraud investigation. Some reports highlight a broader scheme involving pandemic-related funds, pointing towards a staggering $300 million in fraudulent activities, notably linked to the now infamous nonprofit, Feeding Our Future.
A federal prosecutor indicated that as much as half of the $18 billion allocated to 14 state programs since 2018 may have been misappropriated, with a significant number of the accused being Somali Americans. As O’Neill announced stricter oversight measures, Governor Walz emphasized that an audit due by late January would shed more light on the situation, while reassuring constituents that his office is working diligently to prevent further misallocation of funds.
