A Kenyan police officer stationed at one of the gates of the president's official residence in the capital, Nairobi, has died after being shot with an arrow, officials have said.
On Monday morning, a 56-year-old man, armed with a bow and arrows, approached officers at the gate of State House and was ordered to surrender. Instead, he moved forward and shot PC Ramadhan Matanka in the ribs.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, the policeman succumbed to his injuries during treatment, according to a police statement.
The attack has raised serious concerns regarding security protocols at State House, one of Kenya's most fortified sites. PC Matanka’s body has been transported to a mortuary for a forthcoming post-mortem examination, and investigations are underway to discern the motive behind the attack.
The alleged assailant, who reportedly disguised himself as a homeless individual carrying a sack to conceal his weaponry, was apprehended at the scene. Video footage circulated by Kenyan media showed a handcuffed suspect, appearing injured, being transported to a medical facility.
This individual is expected to face court proceedings on the following day, as confirmed by local news outlets.
The National Police Service condemned the act, expressing condolences to the family of the fallen officer and acknowledged the efforts of the responding officers which prevented further harm. Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga emphasized that PC Matanka had paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
