In brief

In the northwestern regions of Syria, the devastating ramifications of a resurgent civil war are manifesting as heavy airstrikes by governmental forces and a surprising rebel offensive plunge the already vulnerable populace into further despair.

Years of conflict, compounded by a terrifying earthquake in February 2023, laid the groundwork for extreme poverty and displacement in Syria’s northwest. In the past week, conditions have worsened significantly with pro-government air attacks intensifying as they battle to repel rebel forces. Reports from ground-level aid workers and the United Nations suggest that nearly 50,000 civilians have been displaced, with essential services hovering on the brink of collapse.Towns like Idlib are experiencing nightmarish scenarios reminiscent of the bloodiest chapters of the civil war. The United Nations detailed over 50 airstrikes targeting Idlib amidst rising tensions, damaging hospitals, schools, and shelters for displaced persons. In the last two days alone, air raids have devastated critical infrastructure, including a water station that has cut off drinking water for 40,000 residents.Stéphane Dujarric, a U.N. spokesperson, highlighted the dire consequences of these attacks, stating that the lack of vital services has shuttered bakeries and shops, plunging Aleppo into food shortages. With civilians enduring life-threatening conditions, calls for humanitarian aid become ever more urgent as the conflict rages on without resolution.
