Swiss Tourist Jailed in Bali for Insulting the Day of Silence

A 26‑year‑old Swiss tourist, Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, walked onto an empty beach in Bali during the Hindu holiday Nyepi – the Day of Silence – and described the scene as “crazy” in a now‑removed video that sparked huge outrage. He was arrested in March and sentenced to one year in prison for violating the island’s strict regulations, which ban public gatherings, noise, and even electricity during Nyepi. Bali’s authorities say the ban applies to everyone on the island, tourists included, and that Zgraggen’s actions offended Balinese people and provoked public anger. He claimed he did not understand the extent of the restrictions and expressed regret in court, apologising to the local community. The case highlights growing tensions as Bali’s tourism numbers rebound post‑pandemic, with authorities tightening scrutiny to curb provocative behaviour by foreign visitors.
