Special Forces Under Investigation in South Africa’s Detective Killing

Lt Col Frans Mathipa, a senior detective in the elite Hawks unit, had been pursuing a critical new lead for months before his deadly disappearance on the high‑speed Pretoria motorway. After a brief period of investigation, prosecutors now allege that seven special‑forces soldiers and a military policeman orchestrated his murder.

New court papers obtain by the BBC name the special‑forces unit’s front company, Peters Communications Trust, as the operator of vehicles that trailed Mathipa moments before gunfire. The same company also owned a black BMW that followed the detective; footage from toll gantries identifies its occupant as Maj Sunnybooi Wambi, a senior special‑forces officer.

Wambi and six of his colleagues are charged with murder, fraud and obstruction. All deny the charges yet many have had bail revoked. A looming trial has not yet been scheduled, and the army has declined to disclose the status of the investigators.

The Broader Context: Abduction of an Alleged IS Recruiter

The detective’s original case centred on Abdella Abadigga, an Ethiopian man who, after re‑entry into South Africa on a smuggled passport, allegedly funded the Islamic State. Police seized CCTV footage from the Mall of Africa where a vehicle matching the front company’s licence plates entered just minutes after Abadigga’s disappearance.

Special‑forces documents describe a supervised “training exercise” at the mall, but footage shows the men wearing blue uniforms and unarmed, suggesting a cover for an abduction. The black BMW’s appearance at the motorway that day supports the claim that the same unit orchestrated the detective’s death and the alleged kidnapping.

The Human Cost

Mathipa’s daughter, Basetsana, urges a prompt, fair trial to honour her father’s sacrifice. The remains of Abadigga remain missing, symbolising unresolved justice amid potent allegations of military malfeasance.
