South African Police Chief Cleared of Corruption Charges
In a surprising turn, South African prosecutors have officially withdrawn the fraud and corruption charges lodged against Lt‑Gen Dumisani Khumalo, the head of the country's crime intelligence bureau, alongside six other police officers. The charges had stemmed from an investigation into the alleged unlawful appointment of a civilian to a sensitive post within the intelligence unit.
The officers were arrested in June 2025, however, they have never been suspended from their duties. Their case was formally dropped in a Pretoria court following a review by the nation’s chief prosecutor last month.
South Africa’s police force has long struggled with records of political interference, corruption allegations, and a persistent struggle to control escalating crime rates. The recent development comes on the heels of an ongoing judicial inquiry, known as the Madlanga Commission, which was set up by President Cyril Ramaphosa after a senior police officer accused organised crime groups of infiltrating governmental ranks.
Speaking outside the court, Gen Khumalo expressed relief at the resolution, stating that the truth “at least is out.” He also noted that the accusations about Dineo Mokwele’s qualification for a senior technical support role were unfounded – a claim that was later contradicted by the Madlanga Commission, which found Mokwele to be well‑qualified and holding multiple certificates.
The narrative surrounding the charges highlights deeper tensions within the police hierarchy and raises questions about the efficacy of oversight mechanisms in the face of ongoing corruption claims. The dropping of these charges may alter the trajectory of the inquiry and reshape how law‑enforcement accountability is pursued across varying timelines.
