In brief

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned that a barrage of Russian missile and drone attacks the night before left at least 600,000 people without electricity, targeting key energy infrastructure in Kyiv and Kharkiv. The assault followed a claim by U.S. President Donald Trump that an “energy ceasefire” had been agreed. Russian officials described the operation as “massive,” citing drone and missile interceptions, while Ukrainian forces reported intercepting 115 of 128 drones. Zelenskiy offered a reciprocal ceasefire if Moscow stops striking energy sites, but Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov warned it would only allow Europe to supply more weapons to the conflict.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said his government has suffered a crippling blow: at least 600,000 Ukrainians have lost electricity after a wave of Russian missile and drone attacks that hit essential energy infrastructure in Kyiv, the capital, and Kharkiv, the northeastern city.

Those strikes hit power plants and transmission lines that serve millions, undoing months of progress on restoring stable supply across the country, even as President Donald Trump claimed a unilateral “energy ceasefire” had been agreed.

Russia’s defence ministry called its overnight assault “massive”, targeting communications and energy sites used by Ukraine’s armed forces, and reported shooting down 902 drones over several Russian regions, including Moscow and Crimea.

Ukraine’s air force data show that Russia launched 39 ballistic and cruise missiles and 128 drones, of which four missiles and 115 drones were intercepted.

Zelenskiy has repeatedly cautioned that Ukraine is ready to stop strikes on Russian energy facilities if Moscow does the same, but Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that a ceasefire would only allow Europe to “pump” more weapons into the conflict.

The full‑scale invasion that began in 2022 now controls roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory.
