Riyadh Airport In Crisis: Second Attack Highlights Houthi Escalation
King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh was evacuated after a loud blast, reports two international news agencies. More than a dozen ambulances appeared on the tarmac as emergency crews rushed in.
Saudi officials have not released an official statement yet, but the airport told passengers to verify flight status with their airlines before proceeding.
The attack follows a broader pattern of violence: just seven days earlier, Houthi forces claimed responsibility for two separate assaults that claimed three lives, including a pilot. Earlier in the month, similar strikes on other Saudi airports left additional casualties.
The Houthi movement asserts that the attacks target Saudi Arabia because of its support for anti‑Houthi forces in the Yemeni civil war. Their recent offensive seized key stretches of the Red Sea coast, notably the port of Mokha, placing international shipping lanes under threat.
In response, a Saudi‑led coalition formed in 2015 to push back against the Houthi expansion. A brief ceasefire last year offered temporary respite, yet it collapsed in July, triggering another wave of insurgent operations.
Shipments that once moved freely through the Bab al‑Mandab Strait are now monitoring Houthi activity. The region remains a critical juncture for global maritime trade, and the continued instability raises concerns for international investors and airlines alike.
