Massive Bust Targets Mexican Mafia in Southern California

A coordinated strike by law enforcement has led to the arrest of over two dozen individuals linked to the Mexican Mafia, amidst allegations of serious criminal activities including drug trafficking and extortion.

In a significant operation, federal and local authorities arrested 43 individuals associated with the Mexican Mafia across Southern California. The charges include murder, kidnapping, extortion, and drug trafficking, with authorities seizing large quantities of drugs and firearms during the crackdown.

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — In a sweeping operation targeting the Mexican Mafia, authorities arrested more than two dozen members and affiliates during a pre-dawn raid across Southern California on Thursday.

The operation, executed by the FBI and multiple local agencies, involved search and arrest warrants across approximately 30 locations in Orange County, just south of Los Angeles, as informed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

A total of 43 individuals, including many already in custody, were indicted on a variety of charges ranging from murder and kidnapping to extortion, illegal gambling operations, and drug trafficking, according to prosecutors.

Authorities seized a staggering 120 pounds (54 kilos) of methamphetamine, over eight pounds (four kilos) of fentanyl, 25 firearms, and in excess of $30,000 in cash during the operation.

“The material we are removing from our streets is extremely dangerous. These individuals demonstrate a complete disregard for human life and are solely driven by profit,” stated First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli during a press briefing.

The Mexican Mafia, which traces its roots back to the 1950s in juvenile detention, has evolved into a global criminal organization that conducts smuggling, drug sales, and extortion from within California’s prison system.

The indictment reveals that one of the gang’s leaders, who was incarcerated, allegedly utilized contraband cellphones to manage the Mexican Mafia's criminal activities from his prison cell between June 2024 and April 2026, directing gang members to commit various serious crimes.

“This organization ran illicit gambling operations from both commercial venues and private homes. They also enforced extortionate taxes, utilizing violence for the protection of those illegal businesses,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office added in their official statement.

The gang has also been suspected in a murder connected to a ‘gang-controlled’ motel in Anaheim.

Initial court appearances for the defendants are scheduled for Thursday afternoon in federal court in Los Angeles and Orange counties.
